Types of leave in Kosovo
Employees are entitled to four weeks’ paid leave per year. For every five years of service with an employer, an additional day of paid holiday leave can be taken.
Kosovo observes 11 official public holidays each year. Employees must receive paid days of leave for all these holidays, with employees who are required to work receive 1.5x their usual wages.
Employees are entitled to 20 days’ paid sick leave per year. If an employee misses three consecutive days, the employer can request a medical certificate.If an injury or illness happens as a result of work, the employee is entitled to 70% of their usual pay.
Pregnant employees are entitled to 12 months’ maternity leave. Maternity leave can start 45 days prior to the due date with a doctor's note. It is not mandatory to start it before the birth date.The employer pays 70% of the mother’s pay during the first six months, with the next three months paid by the government at 50% of the average pay in Kosovo. The final three months are unpaid.If the child needs special care, the employee may work part-time after the end of maternity leave to take care of the child until they turn two years old.
Employees are entitled to three days’ paid paternity leave following the birth (or adoption) of their child. They are also entitled to an additional two weeks’ unpaid paternity leave, which can be taken at any time before the child’s third birthday.
