Types of leave in Latvia

Paid Time Off

Latvian employees are entitled to four calendar weeks of fully paid annual holiday, not counting public holidays. Employees below age 18 are entitled to a full month’s paid holiday. Workers must have been employed for at least six months to qualify for paid holiday.

Public Holidays

Latvia observes 12 public holidays with 15 days off in total.

Sick Leave

Workers are entitled to paid sick leave with 75% of their normal wages for the first two days, and 80% of their normal pay until day 10 of an illness. Starting from the 11th day, sickness benefits are paid by social security.

Maternity Leave

Expectant mothers are entitled to 112 calendar days of maternity leave, with an additional 14 days provided if the mother suffers complications or delivers twins.

Paternity & Parental Leave

Fathers are entitled to 10 calendar days’ leave within two months of their partner’s delivery.

Special Leave & Benefits

Adoption: When a couple adopts a child, one partner is entitled to 10 days leave, with additional unpaid leave available if directed by the Orphan Court.Supplementary leave: Employees are entitled to three days additional annual holiday if they:- Have three or more children under the age of 16- Have a disabled child aged 1 - 17- Work in hazardous fields or heavy industryStudy leave: Employees are entitled to 20 working days off (paid or unpaid) to study, prepare for exams, or defend a diploma paper.
